Make me Look Skinny in Photoshop: A Tutorial

Today, we are finally getting dorsum into the swing of Tutorial Tuesday, thank you to the work of Jen Kiaba. Jen is an amazingly skilled photographer, and has kindly decided to share this photoshop tutorial with us for nipping and tucking that actress weight we might still be lugging effectually from after the holidays. I'll acknowledge, I am no photoshop pro myself, so Jen'south expertise really comes in handy here. I mean, who doesn't want to expect better in photographs, right? Have it away Jen…

Before I grant you the power of the Photoshop Nip and Constrict, I must forewarn yous: be wise with this power – herein lies the danger of becoming a digital anorexic! Longtime readers know how I feel about extremely manipulated bodies. If y'all oasis't heard me on my soapbox, checkout "Photography, Identity and my belly."

Alright *deep breath* here nosotros go! Start out with the image you want to requite a pocket-size constrict to. Detect there is no person in my pic? Pretty sly huh? Yeeah.

Now open the image in Photoshop. I always like to create a Retouch layer, so we always continue the original in perspective. This is helpful then that you can reference what the original looked like and if you have created a reasonable retouch, or if yous accept gone too far.

And so go to Layer>>Duplicate Layer. Name that layer "Retouch" or something like. On your new Retouch layer, take the Lasso Tool and select the part of your image that you lot are going to cinch in a fiddling bit:

Next go to Filter>>Distort>>Shear. Detect is says Distort? Yup…but sayin'…

Ok so take hold of a bespeak on the line and tug it in the management that you would like to "shear." (I always select "Repeat Edge Pixels"). Notice that you can create several ballast points? This allows you to pull in two different directions or control how far one part of the prototype is being sheared.

Once y'all have your line tugged to your liking press Ok. Now await at those pixels that have been repeated. You can either erase them and reveal your Original background, or you tin can utilise the Clone Tool to affect upwards those funky pixels.

In that location is another fashion to manipulate your image, and that'south past using the Liquify Tool (or a combination of Shear and Liquify). We will take the epitome that we take already Sheared and get to Filter>>Liquify. Liquify is a pretty powerful tool – in fact it used to crash my old computer. And so make certain your reckoner is running smoothly before attempting any major edits in Liquify.

I'm going to suggest that yous beginning off with the Hand Tool, which is on the pinnacle of your Tool Palette. Play around with dissimilar brush sizes. Generally I begin with 300 and either work up or down, depending on how much of the epitome I'm working with.

Drag the cursor in the management that you want to shrink. (Exist aware of how this tool affects your groundwork! If you lot take anything linear backside or around your field of study, you lot may discover you get some weird wibbly lines!) If y'all find that you have gone too far, simply click on Restore All. Sometimes you lot want to notice a happy medium between the lipo yous've done and what you began with – merely click on Reconstruct.

And then here is an extreme example of what y'all can practice with these two very powerful tools. (Left side is washed with Shear – Correct side is done with Liquify.) Essentially we accept given this poor gal a digital corset…and maybe removed some of her ribs. Merely you run across the possibilities that are available with these tools.

And just for some perspective – hither is After/Earlier. Again, don't go carried away. Merely if y'all demand to do a quick tweak on the post-holiday abdomen, that'southward pretty understandable.
